Ingredients
  

Burger Patty
  • 2 cans black beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup bread crumbs or panko
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg optional, for binding
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for cooking
Toppings
  • 4 slices cheese optional
  • 4 buns burger buns whole grain or regular
  • 1 cup lettuce shredded
  • 1 tomato tomato sliced
  • 1 avocado avocado sliced
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup optional
  • 1 tablespoon mustard optional

Method
 

Prepare the mixture
  1. In a mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
  2. Add the bread crumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and egg (if using). Mix until well combined.
Form the patties
  1. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty.
Cook the patties
  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and heated through.
Assemble the burgers
  1. Place each patty on a bun and top with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and any additional toppings you prefer.

Notes

These burgers can be grilled as well. If grilling, make sure to oil the grill grates to prevent sticking.
